Watan-A federal judge has issued a ruling preventing the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump from taking control of and shutting down the United States Institute of Peace.
The Institute is an organization that was taken over last March by the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk.
U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell concluded that the think tank, established and funded by Congress to focus on resolving violent conflicts around the world, was illegally seized by the Department of Government Efficiency through “brute force, supported by law enforcement officers from three separate local and federal agencies.”
The plaintiffs in the lawsuit—former board members and the Institute’s president—argued that the organization was founded by law as an independent nonprofit entity.
They also stated that the dismissal of the board members did not follow any of the legal procedures required by the legislation under which the Institute was created.
Moreover, none of these procedures were presented to the four congressional committees that oversee the Institute.
