Watan-More than 400 kidney patients in the Gaza Strip have died since the outbreak of the war due to a severe shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies, amid a continuous collapse of the health system in the besieged enclave, according to Palestinian medical sources on Wednesday.
These deaths represent around 42% of the kidney patients who were receiving treatment in Gaza before the war, highlighting the deepening humanitarian crisis that has gripped the Strip since October 7, 2023.
Dr. Abdel Al-Qishawi, head of the nephrology department in Gaza, stated that the number of kidney patients in the Strip was about 1,100 before the war, but at least 416 have died in recent months due to the acute shortage of medical resources.
He explained that hospitals have been forced to reduce dialysis sessions from three to two per week for each patient in an attempt to minimize the human toll. However, he warned that continuing this measure could lead to serious complications due to the accumulation of toxins in patients’ bodies.
He also noted that the influx of wounded and displaced people from combat zones to hospitals in central and western Gaza has increased pressure on health facilities, causing a reduction in operating hours for dialysis units and creating extremely difficult conditions for patients.
