Watan-In a move reflecting Tunisian public sentiment, the organizers of the Carthage International Festival announced the cancellation of French singer Hélène Ségara’s concert, originally scheduled for July 31 as part of the 59th edition of the festival. The decision came amid a wave of popular outrage over the artist’s previous statements and performances in support of the Israeli occupation.
The cancellation followed widespread social media campaigns calling for Ségara’s removal from the festival lineup, particularly after posts circulated showing her participation in events endorsing Israel and singing at occasions glorifying the Judaization of Jerusalem.
In an official statement, the festival’s administration affirmed that the withdrawal of Hélène Ségara’s performance reflects Tunisia’s unwavering stance in support of the Palestinian cause and rejection of all forms of normalization. They added that this year’s festival will serve as a platform for Palestine, featuring artists who are committed to the cause, such as Mohammed Assaf, Saint Levant, and Nai Barghouti.
For her part, the French singer denied knowing about any agreement with the Carthage Festival. In a media statement, she claimed that she had not signed any contract and also denied supporting Israel.
The festival’s stance was widely praised by Tunisians, who emphasized that culture is not neutral and that art must not serve as a tool for political whitewashing, but should instead be a space for struggle, justice, and freedom.
