Watan-UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated on Monday that a ceasefire in Gaza is not enough, stressing the urgent need for Palestinians to have a state of their own.
In remarks made from New York, Guterres said:“A ceasefire alone is not sufficient. Palestinians, like Israelis, must have a state where they can exercise their rights.”
He described the destruction and loss of life in Gaza as “unprecedented in modern history,” emphasizing that the ongoing suffering violates the core elements of human dignity.
Guterres added:“The idea that 5 million people can live on their land without any rights at all is fundamentally incompatible with human dignity and international law.”
The UN chief announced that an international conference on the two-state solution will be held at the United Nations by the end of July.

Guterres’ comments come as Gaza faces a massive humanitarian catastrophe, with over 196,000 casualties, mass displacement, and a near-total collapse of infrastructure due to ongoing Israeli military operations.
-
His remarks signal growing international impatience with temporary ceasefire arrangements that do not address the root political causes, particularly the lack of a Palestinian state.

The upcoming UN conference is expected to reinvigorate global discussions on implementing a two-state solution, long stalled by years of war, occupation, and failed diplomacy.
