Watan-Former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell launched a scathing attack on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday after the latter nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, describing Netanyahu as a “war criminal.”
Borrell made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter), a day after Netanyahu—who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes—handed Trump a formal letter nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize during a dinner at the White House early Tuesday.
Responding to the news, Borrell wrote:“A war criminal wanted by international justice (Netanyahu) proposes awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the biggest arms supplier (Trump), through whom the region is suffering the largest ethnic cleansing (Israel’s genocide in Gaza).”
On Tuesday, Haaretz revealed U.S. documents indicating that Washington spends hundreds of millions of dollars on military aid to Israel.
Israel also receives $3.8 billion annually from the U.S. under a memorandum of understanding signed with the Obama administration, covering the period from 2019 to 2028.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on November 21, 2024, accusing him of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
That same month, the European Commission reaffirmed its support for the ICC, stating that all EU countries are obligated to execute arrest warrants issued against Netanyahu.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel—backed by the U.S.—has waged what many international observers classify as a genocide in Gaza, involving mass killings, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement. These actions have persisted despite international outcry and binding orders from the International Court of Justice to cease hostilities.
The war has resulted in over 194,000 Palestinians killed or injured, most of them women and children, with over 10,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, and famine claiming many lives, including dozens of children.
