Josep Borrell Accuses U.S. Mercenaries of Killing 550 Starving Palestinians in Gaza

The former EU foreign policy chief blasts European institutions for their silence as deaths mount at aid distribution points operated by a controversial U.S.- and Israel-backed organization.

Watan-Former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, accused American mercenaries of killing 550 Palestinians in Gaza in a single month, while criticizing the Council of Europe and the European Commission for their inaction in the face of such violations.

In a statement posted Thursday on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Borrell wrote:“In one month, 550 starving Palestinians were killed by American mercenaries while trying to get food at distribution points set up by the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,”

an entity supported by the U.S. and Israel, according to him.

He described the situation as “horrific” and directly tagged the Council of Europe and the European Commission, accusing them of willful negligence in addressing the atrocities in Gaza.

Background on the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation

Since May 27, 2025, Israel and the United States have jointly implemented a plan to distribute limited humanitarian aid through a newly formed and controversial entity called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation—bypassing the UN and international organizations.

This has forced desperate Palestinians to make a grim choice:
starve or risk being shot while attempting to access aid.

As of Thursday afternoon, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports:

Borrell’s Longstanding Criticism of Israel

Borrell, a seasoned Spanish politician, has been a vocal critic of Israeli policy in Gaza since the war began on October 7, 2023. During his term as EU foreign affairs chief, he pushed for unified EU condemnation of Israeli actions and called for an immediate ceasefire.

He also frequently criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for her unconditional support of Israel, which many viewed as undermining EU neutrality and international law.

Borrell officially stepped down from his EU post on December 1, 2024, handing over to his successor Kaja Kallas.
