Watan-The National Salvation Front (the largest opposition coalition in Tunisia) declared that the recent “show trials” against opposition figures are an attempt to cover up the government’s failure to address the country’s worsening crises.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Front condemned the latest court rulings issued against former President Moncef Marzouki, former presidential candidate Imed Daimi, former head of the Bar Association Abderrazak Kilani, and other political personalities.
These figures received 22-year prison sentences with immediate enforcement for their participation in a political seminar abroad, which discussed the Tunisian government’s use of the judiciary to pursue political opponents.
The Front stated that the government’s persistence in fabricating politically motivated trials against its critics reflects its desperate search for scapegoats to distract from its economic and social failures, and to falsely portray the opposition as conspirators.
It called on all components of the political spectrum, civil society organizations, and free citizens of Tunisia to reject the use of the judiciary in political trials and to demand a return to constitutional life that ensures public freedoms and separation of powers.
Former President Marzouki reacted to the verdicts by harshly criticizing Tunisia’s judiciary, describing the situation as “caricatural” in the absence of fair trials.
