Palestinian Authority Praises EU Ministers’ Call to Enforce ICJ Ruling Against Israeli Occupation

Palestinian Foreign Ministry hails message from eight European foreign ministers urging EU action to end Israeli occupation in line with international law.

Watan-The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates praised what it called a “significant” letter from the foreign ministers of eight European countries, urging the European Union to enforce the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion calling for an end to Israel’s occupation. The letter reaffirmed those countries’ commitment to international law, the UN Charter, and accountability mechanisms.

The Ministry stated that the ministers’ call for “concrete, practical measures” to ensure EU compliance with the ICJ advisory opinion issued on July 19, 2024, represents an important step toward accountability and upholding the rule of law.

The letter—sent on June 16—was signed by the foreign ministers of Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden, and addressed to the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

The ministry emphasized that the ministers’ rejection of recognition, assistance, or support that would reinforce or sustain Israel’s “illegal and illegitimate occupation” of Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, reflects the growing international consensus in favor of ending Israeli impunity and advancing the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, especially their right to self-determination in an independent, sovereign state.

The Palestinian government also called on all EU institutions and member states to respond swiftly and decisively to the letter’s demands by implementing clear policies and establishing a timeline for executing both the ICJ advisory opinion and UN General Assembly resolution ES-10/24 (adopted on September 18, 2024), which calls for ending the occupation within 12 months.
