Iraq Files UN Complaint Against Israel for Airspace Violation in Iran Strikes
Baghdad condemns Israel's use of Iraqi airspace in attacks on Iran, demanding international accountability and immediate UN Security Council action.
Watan-Iraq officially submitted a complaint to the United Nations Security Council on Friday against Israel, accusing it of using Iraqi airspace in its recent strikes on Iran—calling it a violation of international law and the UN Charter.
Violation of Airspace
The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned “the Israeli entity’s breach of Iraqi airspace and its use for executing military aggression in the region.”
The statement emphasized that “these actions constitute a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and international law,” and called on the UN Security Council to exercise its powers to deter Israel, prevent future violations, and ensure the protection of Iraq’s territorial integrity and regional stability.
Israel had previously confirmed it carried out airstrikes targeting nuclear and military sites in Iran.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani held talks with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Steven Fagin and the commander of the International Coalition against ISIS, General Kevin Leahy.
Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s firm position that “what happened against Iran is a blatant breach of international law and an act of aggression that undermines global order and threatens both regional and international security.”
He stressed that “the timing of the attack, while diplomatic efforts are still ongoing, not only weakens de-escalation initiatives but reveals an intentional push toward escalation and wider confrontation.”
He reiterated Iraq’s “categorical refusal to allow its territory or airspace to be used for any aggressive action against neighboring countries.” He affirmed the government’s responsibility to protect its sovereignty and pledged to take all legal measures necessary.
Al-Sudani also urged the international community—especially the UN Security Council—to take responsible and direct steps to reaffirm the prohibition of force and to prevent the region from sliding into uncontrolled violence.
U.S. Response and Iraq’s Condemnation
The U.S. envoy and coalition commander both stated that the United States had no role in the attack and is committed to keeping Iraq out of the conflict, as per the strategic framework agreement between Baghdad and Washington.
Earlier, the Iraqi government had condemned Israel’s military aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, deeming it a severe breach of international law. Baghdad called for an urgent UN Security Council session to deter Israel’s actions and emphasized its commitment to sovereignty, non-use of force, and peaceful conflict resolution.
Government spokesperson Bassem Al-Awadi stated that the Israeli assault “violates the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter, threatening international peace—especially as it coincides with ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations.”
He urged the global community not to remain passive in the face of such blatant violations, warning that “resorting to force to impose new realities jeopardizes the foundations of modern international relations.”
He added that statements of condemnation are no longer enough and that the international position must now translate into deterrent, practical steps. Al-Awadi also called on the UN Security Council to “convene immediately and take decisive actions to stop the aggression, ensure non-repetition, and restore the credibility of the international legal system.”
Serious Dialogue and Iraqi Solidarity with Iran
According to Al-Awadi, “If current mechanisms fail to deliver, then the international community must begin a serious dialogue to establish alternative frameworks that enforce accountability, justice, and global peace.”
He reiterated Iraq’s commitment to sovereignty, peaceful conflict resolution, and solidarity with the Iranian people—and with all nations that uphold a rules-based international order.
Meanwhile, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mohsen Al-Mandalawi condemned Israel’s attack, warning of the serious threat it poses to regional and global stability.
He called on the international community “to act swiftly to rein in Israeli recklessness and stop its push to ignite regional war.”
Al-Mandalawi emphasized that “continued silence in the face of Israel’s crimes and violations during this critical and sensitive moment will inevitably have grave consequences on global peace.”
He also called for the immediate filing of an international complaint against Israel for violating Iraqi airspace and using it to attack neighboring states, calling it a “flagrant infringement on national sovereignty.”
