Watan-U.S. authorities arrested 65 people on Tuesday evening in the state of New York during protests in support of undocumented immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to the New York Post, the detainees face charges of “disorderly conduct,” and their numbers are reportedly growing.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Foley Square, Manhattan, to protest against ICE’s deportation operations in the state and across the country.
Protesters called for the abolition of ICE and its removal from New York, declaring the need to “dismantle this racist system.”
Clashes erupted between police and demonstrators, who threw water bottles at officers, while police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowds.
The protests in New York coincided with similar demonstrations in major cities like San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago.
In Los Angeles, protests have entered their fourth consecutive day in support of detained undocumented migrants.
The demonstrations in LA began in opposition to border patrol raids targeting undocumented immigrants. Trump adviser Stephen Miller described the protests as “a rebellion against the United States.”
The protests have occasionally turned violent, prompting U.S. authorities to deploy National Guard units to contain the unrest.
Footage showed security forces using tear gas and rubber bullets against demonstrators at intervals throughout the protests.
