Hamas Agrees to U.S. Mediator’s Ceasefire Proposal in Gaza

Deal includes Israeli hostage release, phased Israeli withdrawal, and prisoner exchange.

Watan-A Palestinian official close to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) stated on Monday that the group has agreed to a ceasefire proposal put forth by U.S. special envoy Steve Weitekamp.

“The mediators presented a new proposal over the past few days in an effort to reach a ceasefire agreement,” the official said.

He added that the offer—an updated version of Weitekamp’s roadmap—includes the release of 10 Israeli hostages alive, currently held by Hamas, in two separate batches, in exchange for a 70-day ceasefire, a gradual partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners, including several hundred with high sentences and life terms.

The official also stated that the proposal would initiate indirect negotiations for a long-term truce, as well as lay the groundwork for an independent civil support committee to manage the Gaza Strip.
