Israeli Strike Kills Prominent Gaza Journalist Hassan Abu Warda Along with Family Members

Director of Barq Gaza News Agency targeted in Jabalia airstrike; journalist protection groups condemn “systematic war crime.”

Watan-Palestinian medical sources announced on Sunday the martyrdom of journalist Hassan Majdi Abu Warda, director of the Barq Gaza news agency, following an Israeli airstrike that targeted his home in the Jabalia al-Nazla area in northern Gaza. The attack also claimed the lives of several of his family members.

The Palestinian Center for the Protection of Journalists strongly condemned the killing, describing it as part of a “systematic policy to suppress freedom of expression, erase the Palestinian narrative, and prevent the documentation of crimes on the ground.”

In an official statement, the center stressed:“The assassination of Abu Warda reflects the ongoing escalation of violations against Palestinian journalists since the beginning of the Israeli assault on Gaza.”

The center called for an urgent international investigation into this crime and all attacks on journalists in the Gaza Strip.

It also urged the adoption of “effective measures to ensure the legal and field protection of Palestinian journalists,” emphasizing that “these crimes amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.”

Hassan Abu Warda was one of Gaza’s most recognized local journalists, known for his digital news coverage and reporting during the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza. He was a familiar face to many through his appearances on digital news platforms.

His assassination is part of a relentless wave of media-targeted violence that has gripped Gaza since October 7, 2023. According to reports from press unions and local and international human rights organizations, more than 212 journalists have been killed in Gaza since that date—an unprecedented toll in the history of modern warfare.
