What Type of Bombs Did the Palestinian Resistance Display During the Handover of Israeli Prisoners’ Bodies?

Palestinian resistance showcases unexploded GBU-39 bombs at a ceremony in Khan Younis, alleging they were used in deadly Israeli airstrikes, including the Rafah massacre.

Watan-The Palestinian resistance broadcasted a series of messages during the handover ceremony of Israeli prisoners’ bodies in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on Thursday morning. Among the messages was the display of two bombs placed on the platform where the coffins were laid.

The bombs had inscriptions in English reading: “Killed by U.S. Bombs.” Former U.S. Army ordnance expert Trevor Ball stated that the displayed munitions were unexploded GBU-39 bombs manufactured in the United States.

Ball’s statement, provided to Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency, aligns with previous investigations by U.S. media outlets such as The New York Times and CNN, which confirmed that the Israeli army used these bombs in the Rafah massacre in May 2024, an airstrike that killed dozens.

A prior Sanad investigation also revealed that Israel used the same weapon in August 2024 to target Al-Tabi’in School Mosque, which was sheltering hundreds of displaced people. The attack resulted in 100 deaths and dozens of injuries, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense.

Earlier this month, the United States approved a new shipment of GBU-39 bombs to Israel as part of a $6.75 billion arms deal, according to details published on the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency’s website.

The GBU-39 is considered one of the most lethal smart bombs. Weighing 110 kilograms, it is a precision-guided munition with an accuracy margin of less than one meter, even under challenging weather conditions, according to specifications on the U.S. Air Force website.
