Global Media: Netanyahu Exploits Trump’s Threats as Gaza Ceasefire Hangs in the Balance

Reports Suggest Hamas May Counter Netanyahu’s Strategy by Releasing More Prisoners, While U.S. Mediation Faces Scrutiny.

Watan-Global newspapers have discussed the possibility of the ceasefire in Gaza collapsing, noting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu benefits from U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats, despite these threats not aiding in the return of prisoners.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz argued that resuming the war in Gaza contradicts U.S. interests in the Middle East, including Trump’s ambitions for peace in the region. The report stated that Netanyahu finds himself in an ideal position as Trump escalates his threats, knowing they hinder the return of hostages (prisoners).

In The Guardian, a report suggested that Hamas faces difficult choices, as its actions are directly linked to the likelihood of renewed fighting. However, the newspaper pointed out that if Hamas releases more prisoners on Saturday, it could undermine the threats posed by Netanyahu and Trump, effectively countering their strategy.

According to the report, such a move by Hamas “would leave no justification for canceling the second phase of the agreement, keeping the ceasefire in place.”

The Problem with Final Warnings

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal cited a former Mossad official who claimed that Hamas wants the ceasefire to continue. The paper also quoted a researcher stating that Washington’s alignment with Israel’s far-right has reinforced Hamas’s doubts about the U.S. as a fair mediator.

The newspaper concluded that the main issue now “lies in the final warnings being issued by all sides.”

Public Opinion on Palestinian Sovereignty

In The Jerusalem Post, a poll revealed a direct link between opposition to Palestinian sovereignty over Gaza and the West Bank and the level of religious observance among Israelis.

The survey, which the newspaper helped conduct, showed that 86% of secular Israelis support upholding the Gaza ceasefire until all prisoners are returned.
