Yair Lapid Meets UAE FM in Abu Dhabi Amid Gaza Bloodshed: Mediation or Pressure on Palestinians?

As Gaza reels under Israeli bombardment, Lapid urges Arab states to pressure Hamas—raising concerns about the nature and goals of “peace diplomacy.”

Watan-In a scene that raises more questions than hope, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid met with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi, where they discussed what was described as “efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.”

The meeting, which came amid the intensifying bloodshed in Gaza, casts doubt on the role some Arab capitals are playing in so-called de-escalation efforts. The key question: Has “mediation” become a euphemism for applying pressure on Palestinians in line with Israeli demands?

Lapid made no effort to hide Israel’s objectives, openly calling on Arab nations to pressure Hamas into accepting a ceasefire agreement—without any mention of halting Israeli aggression or condemning attacks on civilians.

Since the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020, relations between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv have progressed far beyond symbolic normalization, reaching deep levels of political and security coordination. Within this context, the recent meeting appears to be another chapter in what observers call “conditional peace”—a framework that seems to come at the expense of Palestinian rights.

Meanwhile, Palestinian factions continue internal consultations over truce proposals, while the world awaits the outcome of an upcoming visit by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington.

The central question remains:Is what’s happening in Abu Dhabi a step toward a just settlement, or an attempt to impose a ceasefire drafted by the occupier—written on the ruins of Gaza?
