Watan-The Qatari authorities have released eight former Indian soldiers who were sentenced to death on charges of espionage for Israel.
This was announced by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, without providing details about the eight Indians or their alleged crimes.
The Indian Foreign Ministry stated that all men have been released. It added: “The Indian government welcomes the release of 8 Indian citizens working for Dar Al Arkan Global who were detained in Qatar.”
It further stated that seven of them have returned to India, thanking the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for allowing their release and return.
Qatar has not commented on the case or announced the charges.
Arrest of Indian soldiers
This comes as Indian media reported that the men, including former high-ranking naval officers, were arrested in Doha in August 2022.
In October, Indian authorities expressed shock at the death sentences issued by a Qatari court against the men. Then in December, India announced that their sentences had been reduced.
The eight men were employees of “Dar Al Arkan,” a Gulf-based company providing “comprehensive support solutions” to the aviation, security, and defense sectors.
Charge against Indian soldiers
Previous Indian reports revealed that the men were spying for a third country, specifically accused of spying for Israel based on several sources.
