Watan<\/strong><\/em>-Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt stated on Wednesday that Israel is not protecting the Druze community in Syria\u2019s southern Suwayda province, warning against those he described as \u201cweak-minded individuals\u201d who fall for Israeli propaganda.<\/p>\n

Jumblatt, the former head of Lebanon\u2019s Progressive Socialist Party, made the remarks during a phone interview with Syrian state television.\u201cIsrael does not protect the Druze in Suwayda,\u201d he said. \u201cIt merely uses some weak-minded people to claim it does.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that certain individuals\u2014whom he did not name\u2014had taken advantage of the violations and attacks that occurred over the past two days.<\/p>\n

Jumblatt drew parallels to Lebanon\u2019s past:\u201cOne of the causes of the Lebanese civil war (1975\u20131990) was Israel\u2019s claim that it was protecting certain factions. That ended in disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized ongoing communication with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and Interior Minister Anas Khattab, saying:\u201cWe are working to ease tensions, and the central role in that effort belongs to the Syrian leadership.\u201d\u201cWe must deny opportunists their chance and open a broad dialogue with Suwayda\u2019s societal actors,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

Jumblatt\u2019s comments came the same day that the Israeli army launched a new wave of airstrikes on Syria, targeting over 160 sites across Suwayda, Daraa, Damascus, and Rural Damascus. Syria\u2019s Ministry of Health reported three deaths and 28 injuries, including civilians, due to strikes in central Damascus.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Syrian army units entered Suwayda to restore order following violent clashes between Druze and Bedouin militias, which left dozens dead.<\/p>\n

Israel has repeatedly justified its involvement in southern Syria by invoking a supposed duty to protect the Druze, an argument many in Syria and Lebanon reject.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, a joint statement by leading Syrian Druze figures reaffirmed their rejection of foreign intervention, their commitment to Syrian territorial unity, and their opposition to separatist agendas.<\/p>\n

Despite this, Israel continues near-daily air raids on Syria, hitting military and civilian infrastructure and killing numerous people. Since 1967, Israel has occupied the Golan Heights, and following the 2024 ousting of Bashar al-Assad, it has expanded its control over the Syrian buffer zone, taking advantage of the post-uprising instability.<\/p>\n
