Watan<\/strong><\/em>-Retired Israeli General Amos Gilad, former head of the Operations Directorate in the IDF and a veteran of Israeli intelligence and strategic planning, warned on Sunday that the plan to impose direct military rule in Gaza is a dangerous illusion, recalling Israel\u2019s failed experience in Lebanon in 1982.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack then, illusions were created about a new reality in Lebanon that would suit Israeli interests. These illusions faded over 18 bloody years and ended in a unilateral withdrawal,\u201d Gilad wrote in Yedioth Ahronoth.<\/p>\n

The Fantasy of Control<\/h3>\n

Gilad acknowledges that direct military rule in Gaza may sound appealing, as it could theoretically allow Israel to defeat Hamas completely. However, he cautions that in practice, such a policy would weaken Israel:<\/p>\n

  • \n

    It would cost billions of shekels annually to maintain a direct military presence.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Rebuilding the devastated Gaza Strip would require tens of billions more.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Most dangerously, if Israel doesn\u2019t reach an agreement to end its presence soon, it could doom the fate of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza\u2014both the living and the dead.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Myth of “Another October 7”<\/h3>\n

    Gilad rejects the claim that unless Hamas is eradicated to the last fighter, another October 7-style attack is inevitable:\u201cThis claim is baseless. The IDF has dismantled Hamas\u2019s military structures and inflicted serious damage on its senior and junior leadership. Nearly no one remains. Now is the time to translate these military achievements into a political agreement, under American sponsorship, beginning with the urgent release of the hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n

    The “Humanitarian City” Disaster<\/h3>\n

    Gilad is fiercely critical of Israel\u2019s controversial plan to concentrate Palestinians in a so-called \u201chumanitarian city\u201d in southern Gaza\u2014often compared by critics to a concentration camp.\u201cThis plan will be a major political disaster for Israel. Arab countries will distance themselves. Our international standing will further deteriorate. In the end, even Trump may turn his back on us.\u201d<\/p>\n

    He argues that this move would destroy regional diplomacy, including Trump\u2019s potential peace deals and hopes for a Nobel Prize.<\/p>\n

    Regional and Global Repercussions<\/h3>\n

    According to Gilad:<\/p>\n

      The Arab world\u2014especially Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan\u2014will not accept forced displacement of Palestinians.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      The global community listens to extremist voices in Israel like Smotrich and Ben Gvir, who threaten to expel Palestinians or seize Al-Aqsa. These statements undermine regional stability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      \u201cThe idea that Palestinians would voluntarily relocate into a \u2018humanitarian city\u2019 is a dangerous fantasy,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Iran and the U.S. Alliance<\/h3>\n

      Gilad stresses that Israel\u2019s security relies on its strategic alliance with the U.S., particularly via CENTCOM, which proved crucial in the recent clashes with Iran. Israeli success in this regard was achieved thanks to joint efforts between:<\/p>\n

        Air Force<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Mossad<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        U.S. military intelligence<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \u201cBut as long as the murderous Iranian regime exists, it will continue trying to destroy Israel. That\u2019s why we need to isolate and weaken Iran and stop it from acquiring nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n

        He believes regional alliances are critical in this fight.<\/p>\n

        Danger from Within: The Haredi Draft Law<\/h3>\n

        On the domestic front, Gilad warns against the ultra-Orthodox (\u201cHaredi\u201d) draft exemption law\u2014mockingly called the \u201cconscription law\u201d in Israeli media.\u201cThis collective exemption, combined with the immense burden on reserve and regular soldiers, and the erosion of liberal democratic principles upon which Zionism rests, is a real threat to the country\u2019s future\u2014no less dangerous than the plans for Gaza and the West Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n

        A Historic Crossroads<\/h3>\n

        \u201cIsrael is at a historic crossroads, perhaps more than ever before,\u201d Gilad declares.<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u201cWe need courageous decisions. The illusion that the U.S. will always stand by us could trap us and turn out to be false.\u201d<\/p>\n

        His final call:\u201cNow is the time for a diplomatic breakthrough\u2014not for drowning in the quagmire of Gaza, as we did in Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
