Immigration officials arrested him at his university dormitory in Manhattan on March 8. President Donald Trump, a Republican, described the protests as antisemitic and vowed to deport foreign students involved\u2014Khalil became the first target of this policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\" data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1556\">After hearing oral arguments from Khalil\u2019s lawyers and the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. District Judge Michael Farbeyarz ordered Khalil\u2019s release from an immigration detention center in rural Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-10\" data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1735\">Judge Farbeyarz said the government made no effort to refute evidence provided by Khalil\u2019s legal team showing that he posed no threat to the community and was not a flight risk.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16132\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16132\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16132 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pm.jpg\" alt=\"Khalil had been a prominent figure in protests supporting Palestine and opposing Israel\u2019s war on Gaza.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pm.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pm-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pm-768x461.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mahmoud Khalil<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\" data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"2044\">In his ruling, the judge added: \u201cThere is at least a shadow cast over the government\u2019s primary claim\u2014it appears there may have been an attempt to exploit immigration charges here as a means to punish the petitioner (Khalil),\u201d asserting that punishing someone in a civil immigration case is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-12\" data-start=\"2046\" data-end=\"2335\">Khalil, a lawful permanent resident of the United States, maintains that he is being punished for his political speech, in violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
