Watan<\/strong><\/em>-Hebrew media reported on Sunday that the United States and Israel have agreed to call for the termination of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) operating in southern Lebanon, with a final decision expected at the UN Security Council in August.<\/p>\n

According to the private Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom, both nations have decided to end the mission of UNIFIL, which has been stationed in southern Lebanon since 1978.<\/p>\n

The newspaper stated that \u201cIsrael has decided to align with the U.S. administration\u2019s position calling for the end of UNIFIL\u2019s mission, which was established following the 1978 Litani Operation.\u201d<\/p>\n

UNIFIL\u2019s Mandate and Criticism from U.S. and Israel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

UNIFIL was created under UN Security Council Resolutions 425 and 426, following Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon. Its original mandate included ensuring Israel\u2019s withdrawal, restoring international peace and security, and helping the Lebanese government regain control over the area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Although Israel fully withdrew in 2000, UNIFIL continued to monitor the border. After the 2006 war between Lebanon and Israel, the force was redeployed under Resolution 1701 to support the Lebanese Army\u2019s deployment in the south, monitor the cessation of hostilities, and facilitate humanitarian aid to civilians.<\/p>\n

Israel Hayom claimed that UNIFIL has \u201cfailed to prevent the rearmament of militant groups in the region throughout its mission,\u201d which both Washington and Tel Aviv see as a failure to meet security objectives.<\/p>\n

The report added that the United States is pushing to reduce the cost of operating the force, while Israel believes coordination with the Lebanese Army is sufficient and that UNIFIL is no longer necessary.<\/div>\n

As of 17:30 GMT, no official statements had been issued by the U.S., Israel, or the UN force regarding the report.<\/div>\n

A final decision on UNIFIL\u2019s fate is expected to be made at the UN Security Council in August 2025.<\/div>\n

Currently, UNIFIL maintains regular patrols along the Israel\u2013Lebanon border with around 10,000 personnel from over 50 countries, tasked with reducing tensions between Hezbollah and the Israeli army.<\/div>\n
