and decaffeinated coffee produced similar effects on alertness and brain activity, highlighting the powerful role of expectation and routine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\" data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1401\">The study, published in the scientific journal Heliyon and reported by Science Alert, reveals that even when participants drank decaf, they still showed improved cognitive performance\u2014especially in reaction time tests.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-10\" data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1429\">Study Design:<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1767\">\n<li before the study<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-17\" data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1614\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-18\" data-start=\"1587\" data-end=\"1614\">Avoid coffee for 8\u201311 hours<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-19\" data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1641\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-20\" data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1641\">Fast for 2 hours 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tea and medication effectiveness<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1767\">\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-21\" data-start=\"1642\" data-end=\"1767\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-22\" data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1767\">Upon arriving at the lab, participants completed cognitive and auditory tests, and underwent heart rate and EEG monitoring.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-23\" data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"1806\">They were then split into two groups:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1911\">\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-24\" data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1836\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-25\" data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"1836\">One received pure decaf<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-26\" data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"1911\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-27\" data-start=\"1839\" data-end=\"1911\">The other received decaf with added caffeine (6mg\/kg of body weight)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-28\" data-start=\"1918\" data-end=\"1939\">Key Findings:<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"2288\">\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-29\" data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"2058\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-30\" data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"2058\">Both groups experienced increased blood pressure and slower heart rate, which are typical coffee responses.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-31\" data-start=\"2059\" data-end=\"2160\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-32\" data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2160\">No significant improvement was seen in math-based cognitive tests after drinking either coffee.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-33\" data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2288\">\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-34\" data-start=\"2163\" data-end=\"2288\">Reaction times improved in both groups\u2014even in the decaf group\u2014suggesting that expectation alone can boost alertness.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-35\" data-start=\"2290\" data-end=\"2580\">Researchers noted that the smell and ritual of coffee drinking might trigger the brain\u2019s performance-enhancing responses, even without caffeine.
