Watan<\/strong><\/em>-German Chancellor Friedrich Merz strongly criticized Israel\u2019s intensifying assault on the Gaza Strip on Monday, stating that he no longer understands the goals of the Israeli military and warning that he can no longer support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government.<\/p>\n

In a radio interview, Merz said:\u201cFrankly, I no longer understand what the Israeli army is doing now in Gaza, or what its goal is.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added:\u201cThe extent to which the civilian population has suffered\u2014especially in recent days\u2014can no longer be justified by the fight against Hamas terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Merz emphasized that Germany must remain cautious in offering public criticism of Israel, unlike with any other country in the world\u2014a reference to Germany\u2019s historical legacy from World War II.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question is: how clear should our criticism be? For historical reasons, I am more restrained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Still, Merz asserted:\u201cWhen limits are crossed, and when international humanitarian law is violated, then the German chancellor must also speak out publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a rare and firm condemnation of Israel\u2014one of Berlin\u2019s closest allies alongside Washington\u2014Merz stressed that he wants Germany to remain \u201cIsrael\u2019s most important partner in Europe,\u201d but warned:\u201cThe Israeli government must refrain from doing anything that even its closest friends are no longer willing to accept.\u201d<\/p>\n
