Watan<\/strong><\/em>-Following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announcing an airstrike near Syria\u2019s presidential palace, opposition leaders in Israel are now openly calling for military intervention in Syria under the guise of protecting the Druze minority.<\/p>\n

Opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote on X that Israel \u201ccannot abandon the Druze in Syria\u201d, stressing that the Syrian regime must understand the Druze are \u201cour allies\u201d and Israel \u201cwill not stand by\u201d as they are attacked.<\/p>\n

Benny Gantz, head of the opposition\u2019s National Unity Party, echoed Lapid\u2019s call, saying he spoke on Friday morning with Muwaffaq Tarif, the spiritual leader of Druze in Israel. Gantz claimed Israel had a \u201cmoral obligation and strategic interest\u201d in supporting Druze in Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is first and foremost a values-based alliance with those who live and fight alongside us,\u201d Gantz said. \u201cTheir relatives are in danger, and we must protect the Druze-held areas in Syria from extremist groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statements followed Druze protests across Israel, including road closures in the Galilee and Carmel, and demonstrations near Netanyahu\u2019s home in Caesarea, demanding action to stop what they called a \u201cmassacre\u201d of Druze in Syria.<\/p>\n

In response, Netanyahu and Katz confirmed that Israeli warplanes struck near the presidential palace in Damascus, calling it a \u201cclear warning\u201d to Syria\u2019s new leadership:\u201cWe will not allow hostile forces near southern Damascus or any threat to the Druze.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. State Department also issued a statement, condemning violence and threats against the Druze and urging Syria\u2019s interim authorities to \u201cprotect all civilians\u201d and \u201cend sectarian conflict\u201d, while calling for a representative future government in Syria.<\/p>\n

Calls for Israeli Military Involvement<\/h3>\n

The Druze Veterans Association in Israel<\/a> sent a memorandum to Netanyahu and Katz urging direct military intervention in Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cHundreds of Druze fighters are ready to volunteer to fight alongside their brethren,\u201d the memo stated, \u201ceven at personal risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier, Muwaffaq Tarif called on Israel and the international community to act immediately to prevent a massacre near Damascus:\u201cIsrael must not stand idly by,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

The statements sparked a wave of pro-Druze demonstrations in Israel, with protestors chanting:\u201cWith our soul and blood, we sacrifice for you, Sahnaia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caution Against Military Escalation<\/h3>\n

Former Israeli National Security Adviser Giora Eiland urged caution, stating that direct intervention near Damascus is unrealistic, given the distance and chaotic combat landscape.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Israeli public radio, Eiland said:\u201cIt\u2019s far easier for Israel<\/a> to operate in Jabal al-Arab (Sweida) than Damascus. Can Israel really help? The question is whether \u2018al-Joulani\u2019 [Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa] controls the armed groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

He suggested that a diplomatic approach could be more effective than force:\u201cIsrael is relying solely on military power instead of exploring softer, diplomatic options.\u201d<\/p>\n

Historical Context: Israeli Druze-Syria Relations<\/h3>\n

The tensions are not new. In 1954, under the rule of Syrian President Adib al-Shishakli, prominent Druze figures were arrested, leading to public protests by Druze members of the Israeli Knesset, including Jabr Dahash Maadi, who urged the Israeli government to intervene in Syria.<\/p>\n

Historian Mansour Maadi recounts in his 2014 book “Sheikh Jabr Dahash Maadi: A Man of Dignity”, how Druze leaders and even then-Prime Minister Moshe Sharett expressed concern over Syrian repression of Druze, proposing formal discussions in Israel\u2019s Foreign Affairs and Security Committee.<\/p>\n

Efforts were made to undermine the Shishakli regime using Israeli media. The regime collapsed later that year.<\/p>\n

A Warning Against Exploitation<\/h3>\n

Dr. Thaer Abu Saleh, from Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, warned on social media:<\/p>\n

\u201cSyrians, beware. Regional and global powers do not wish you well. They exploit the weak among us to spark sectarian division and justify intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n

He urged unity:\u201cWe need a spiritual council from all sects to confront such threats and prevent Syria from becoming a battlefield of sectarian strife.\u201d<\/p>\n
