Though rare, it is serious and untreatable, resulting in persistent coughing, wheezing, fatigue, and shortness of breath.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1368\">What is Popcorn Lung?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1368\">The term dates back to the early 2000s when several workers at a microwave popcorn factory developed lung issues after inhaling a chemical called diacetyl, which gives popcorn its buttery flavor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1370\" data-end=\"1575\">Diacetyl is a flavoring compound that becomes toxic when inhaled. But these flavors come at a chemical cost\u2014potentially leading to popcorn lung.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2168\">Although many of these flavoring agents are approved for food use, they are not safe when inhaled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2170\" data-end=\"2496\">When consumed, chemicals are processed through the digestive system and filtered by the liver, reducing their potential harm. However, when inhaled, they bypass this filtration entirely and are absorbed directly into the lungs, and from there into the bloodstream\u2014reaching vital organs like the heart and brain within seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2498\" data-end=\"2708\">The Science Alert report warned that in e-cigarettes, these chemicals are heated, breaking down into new compounds\u2014some of which have never been tested for inhalation safety, raising significant concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2710\" data-end=\"2919\">It also noted a multinational study that found teens who use e-cigarettes report far more respiratory issues than non-users.
