Monday in Manhattan federal court against the organizers and supporters of pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University, accusing them of acting as a \u201cpropaganda arm\u201d for the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), and as a \u201cdomestic public relations firm\u201d in New York City and on campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"355\" data-end=\"628\">Among the nine Americans and Israelis are individuals who were affected by the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, including relatives of those killed or taken hostage, as well as two individuals affiliated with Columbia University who reported being mistreated there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"630\" data-end=\"920\">They claim that the defendants have coordinated their efforts with Hamas since 2023 \u2014 which is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department \u2014 to support its attacks, and that some of the defendants had prior knowledge of the attack, href=\"https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/2025\/03\/12\/white-house-defends-arrest-of-palestinian-activist-mahmoud-khalil-ahead-of-deportation\/\">Mahmoud<\/a> Khalil, who helped lead the protests at Columbia University and served as a negotiator between university administrators and the coalition of student groups and the group \u201cColumbia University Apartheid Divest,\u201d which is also named in the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1395\">Other defendants include the group \u201cWithin Our Lifetime \u2013 United for Palestine,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/2025\/03\/11\/palestinian-student-mahmoud-khalil-sought-protection-columbia-chose-to-support-trump\/\">Columbia<\/a> Students for Justice in Palestine, Columbia\/Barnard Jewish Voice for Peace, and some of their leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1397\" data-end=\"1667\">The lawsuit states: \u201cIt is illegal for Hamas to directly contract a public relations firm in the United States, or to hire agents to enforce its will in American cities\u2026 Yet these are precisely the services that the defendant groups are deliberately providing to Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"1832\">The defendants, or the attorneys who represented them in previous legal proceedings related to Columbia University, have not yet The Trump administration is seeking to deport Khalil, a permanent resident, who is currently detained in Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2027\" data-end=\"2260\">Marc Goldfeder, an attorney with the National Jewish Advocacy Center who represents the plaintiffs, said in an email that the coordination activities of the defendants with Hamas are well known because \u201cthey have said so repeatedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2488\">He added: \u201cThere is nothing wrong with supporting Palestinians, and pro-Hamas speech remains protected in most contexts.
