Watan<\/strong><\/em>-Israel’s Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, confirmed on Friday that the government is not permitted to appoint a new head of the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security agency) at the present time, following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to freeze the dismissal of current chief Ronen Bar.<\/p>\n

The private Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth quoted Baharav-Miara as saying: \u201cThe government is prohibited from appointing a new Shin Bet head after the court\u2019s decision to freeze the dismissal.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cAny step that could harm the standing of the current Shin Bet chief is also forbidden.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netanyahu Responds<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that only the government, according to law, has the authority to appoint the head of the Shin Bet.<\/p>\n

This marks his first response to the Supreme Court\u2019s freezing of the government\u2019s decision to dismiss Ronen Bar.<\/p>\n

Addressing concerns over the potential outbreak of civil war due to his divisive decisions \u2014 including Bar\u2019s dismissal \u2014 Netanyahu said on X (formerly Twitter): \u201cThere will be no civil war. Israel is a country governed by the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cOnly the government decides who will head the Shin Bet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli Supreme Court froze the government’s decision to dismiss Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, pending a review of petitions submitted against the dismissal.<\/p>\n

Channel 12 reported that the court decided to freeze the dismissal until it reviews the petitions, though it did not specify when the hearings would begin.<\/p>\n

Opposition Challenges Dismissal of Shin Bet Chief<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On Friday morning, opposition parties \u2014 Yesh Atid, National Unity, Yisrael Beiteinu, and the Democrats \u2014 jointly submitted a petition, along with organizations like the Movement for Quality Government.<\/p>\n

The petitions argue that the dismissal is based on external considerations, including Shin Bet investigations into Netanyahu\u2019s office and a recently published position by the agency blaming the political leadership for the October 7 disaster.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu had previously justified Bar\u2019s dismissal by citing a \u201clack of trust\u201d in him, in the aftermath of the events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked 22 settlements and 11 military bases near Gaza, killing and capturing Israelis in retaliation for \u201cthe Israeli occupation\u2019s daily crimes against the Palestinian people and their holy sites.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bar, however, hinted that there were political motivations behind Netanyahu\u2019s decision, stating that the real reason was his refusal to meet Netanyahu\u2019s demands for \u201cpersonal loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Early Friday, the Israeli government unanimously approved Netanyahu\u2019s proposal to dismiss Ronen Bar \u2014 a first-of-its-kind decision in Israel\u2019s history \u2014 despite thousands of Israelis protesting the move.<\/p>\n

Bar is scheduled to step down on April 10, or when a permanent replacement is appointed \u2014 whichever comes first \u2014 according to the government’s decision.<\/p>\n

In this context, the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz quoted former Shin Bet chief Carmi Gillon, who said during a protest in West Jerusalem on Thursday: \u201cNetanyahu is sacrificing the Shin Bet and the Attorney General on Sunday, and later this week, he will destroy the Supreme Court\u2019s standing.\u201d<\/p>\n
