The most striking irony, however, is that many now look back on his era with nostalgia, given the deteriorating economic and political conditions under Abdel Fattah el-Sisi\u2019s rule.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"793\">When the January 25 Revolution of 2011 toppled Mubarak\u2019s regime, Egyptians were hopeful for a new era free from oppression and corruption. Yet, 14 years after the revolution and 11 years under Sisi\u2019s rule, Egyptians find themselves facing an even harsher reality, characterized by a severe economic crisis and unprecedented political repression. This has led many to lament, saying: \u201cNot a single day was as bad as under Mubarak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"1312\">Ironically, the Mubarak regime, which was overthrown for its authoritarianism, is now seen by some as less repressive compared to Sisi\u2019s rule. Reports indicate tens of thousands of political prisoners, a rise in enforced disappearances, and widespread human rights violations in prisons.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"51\">Mubarak vs. Sisi: A Harsh Comparison<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"1312\">Journalist Francesco Serrano pointed out that public freedoms under Mubarak were better than under Sisi, who believes that allowing even minimal opposition was Mubarak\u2019s greatest mistake\u2014one that ultimately led to his downfall.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6348\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6348\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6348 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/egypt-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sisi\u2019s Regime\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/egypt-1-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/egypt-1-1-390x220.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/egypt-1-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/egypt-1-1-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.watanserb.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/egypt-1-1-450x253.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abdel Fattah el-Sisi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1847\">Economically, conditions have worsened significantly under Sisi, with rising poverty rates and soaring foreign debt, while massive, often impractical, spending projects have contributed to a deepening economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1847\">The middle and lower classes are struggling under skyrocketing prices, despite Sisi\u2019s repeated promises that costs would not increase. In reality, Egypt is suffering under a harsh economic program imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in exchange for an $8 billion loan, further burdening citizens.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"2160\">Sisi has also faced accusations of compromising Egypt\u2019s sovereignty, particularly after ceding the Tiran and Sanafir islands to Saudi Arabia\u2014a move that sparked widespread outrage. Many now compare Mubarak\u2019s policies, which maintained Egypt\u2019s territorial integrity, with Sisi\u2019s concessions to regional allies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2162\" data-end=\"2372\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Amid this backdrop, Egyptians find themselves reminiscing about Mubarak\u2019s era, asking: Was the revolution in vain?
