Watan<\/strong><\/em>-The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that lifting European sanctions on Syria is contingent on steps taken by the interim government in Damascus.<\/p>\n

In an interview conducted by Anadolu Agency ahead of her scheduled visit to Turkey today, Friday, Kallas emphasized the need for a shared understanding among international and regional actors, including Arab states and Turkey, in response to a question about the EU\u2019s position on Syria.<\/p>\n

She added, “We want to see an inclusive government in Syria. We do not want to see any extremism. It is in everyone\u2019s interest for the country to be stable. Therefore, we are cautiously optimistic.”<\/p>\n

Kallas expressed the EU’s willingness to discuss easing sanctions \u201cstep by step.\u201d<\/p>\n

Necessary Steps<\/h3>\n

Kallas continued, “If they (the Syrian government) do the right things, we are ready to take the necessary steps. However, if they take steps in the wrong direction, we are prepared to backtrack and reimpose some sanctions.”<\/p>\n

She indicated that the issue of sanctions on Syria would be discussed by EU<\/a> foreign ministers during their meeting on January 27.<\/p>\n

Kallas stressed that access to banking services is a priority for Syria’s interim government, adding, “To be realistic, our next step should be shaped by what they (the Syrian government) do.”<\/p>\n

On December 8, 2024, Syrian factions took control of the capital, Damascus, marking the end of 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of the Assad family’s leadership.<\/p>\n
