ICC Reports Sophisticated Cyberattack Amid Rising Political Pressure
The International Criminal Court confirms targeted cyber intrusion—the second in recent years—amid scrutiny over arrest warrants for Israeli and Russian leaders.
Watan-The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced on Monday that it discovered a cyber security incident late last week, describing it as a “new, sophisticated, and targeted” attack. The court added that the breach has now been contained.
In a statement, the ICC explained that this incident marks the second cyberattack targeting the court in recent years.
Back in 2023, the ICC suffered a separate cyberattack, which disrupted its operations for weeks and cut off access to most of its internet-connected systems. At that time, the court did not disclose specific details about the nature of the attack or who was responsible.
The court has faced heightened political pressure since issuing an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last November, accusing him of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity amid the ongoing war in Gaza. The court did not provide further details on the recent cyberattack.
The ICC has also issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, alleging the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. Neither Russia nor Israel are signatories to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC. Both countries deny the allegations and reject the court’s jurisdiction.
