Israeli President Herzog Hosts Controversial Muslim Delegation Amid Gaza War

President Herzog receives Muslim clerics from Europe, led by pro-Israel Imam Hassan Chalghoumi, to promote "interfaith coexistence" while war in Gaza continues.

Watan-On Monday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog received a delegation of Muslim religious leaders from Europe at the Presidential Residence in Jerusalem. The meeting focused on interfaith coexistence, taking place against the backdrop of the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

In a post on his official X (Twitter) account, Herzog wrote:“This morning, I hosted key Muslim leaders from across Europe at the Presidential Residence.”

He praised the delegation, which was led by French-Tunisian Imam Hassan Chalghoumi, for choosing the path of “bridge-building, dialogue, and faith,” especially at a time when the world is witnessing “tensions between Jews and Muslims,” in Herzog’s words.

Chalghoumi, the imam of Drancy suburb in Paris, is a controversial figure known for his public support of Israel and opposition to political Islam. He previously took part in protests condemning the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

According to Israeli media, the visiting delegation included religious leaders from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The visit was organized by ELNET (European Leadership Network), a group that promotes stronger ties between Europe and Israel.

Notably, ELNET organized a rally in Paris in March 2025 under the slogan: “For the Republic: France Against Islamism.” The demonstration drew around 2,000 participants, including prominent figures from the French right and far-right political movements.
