Qatar’s Efforts for Ceasefire in Gaza: Unraveling the Main Dispute

Watan-Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani revealed the main point of contention in the negotiations for a ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Al Thani stated that the essence of the dispute lies in agreeing on the return of displaced persons to certain areas within the sector.

The Qatari minister added in statements reported by media outlets that Qatar “is doing its utmost to reach an agreement to cease fire in the Gaza Strip, but the outcome is in the hands of the parties.”

Permanent ceasefire in Gaza Mohammed bin Abdulrahman expressed hope that “decisions by the International Court of Justice would represent the beginning of a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.”

The Qatari Foreign Minister stressed the importance of the international community assuming its responsibility and imposing a permanent ceasefire.

The Qatari official reiterated “Doha’s position calling for a fair and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue.”

He pointed out Qatar’s commitment from the outset “to negotiating the release of hostages and ending the war in the Gaza Strip.”

Qatar’s mediation for Gaza Qatar, along with the United States and Egypt, worked to mediate talks in the Qatari capital, Doha, in an effort to secure a ceasefire between the Israeli occupation and Hamas.

The United Nations Security Council had adopted a resolution for the first time calling for an “immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan,” which began two weeks ago.

The Qatari mediator seeks to ensure that any new ceasefire leads to a “permanent ceasefire” and to “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

Doha affirmed that talks between Hamas and the Israeli occupation are ongoing, despite Israel’s procrastination and its continued brutal violations and crimes in the Gaza Strip.
