Watan-The Syrian Ministry of Information on Sunday denied widespread reports claiming that an assassination attempt on President Ahmad Al-Sharaa had been thwarted.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a source from the ministry stated:“There is no truth to the information circulated by various media outlets about the Syrian Arab Army and Turkish intelligence thwarting an attempt to assassinate President Ahmad Al-Sharaa during his visit to Daraa.”
Several news platforms had earlier alleged that a Daesh (ISIS)-affiliated cell led by a man from Daraa was behind the plot. The suspect was reportedly arrested by the Syrian army one day before Al-Sharaa’s visit to the southern province.
Previously, the French-Lebanese daily L’Orient-Le Jour cited diplomatic sources claiming that President Al-Sharaa had survived at least two assassination attempts since taking office in December last year, with one such attempt said to have occurred in March.
