Watan-An American doctor has recommended eating two pieces of a specific fruit daily to boost gut health and help prevent cancer.
According to the U.S. network Fox News, that fruit is kiwi.
Dr. Trisha Pasricha, a Boston-based gastroenterologist, advises her patients to eat two kiwis a day to aid digestion and provide a good dose of vitamins and antioxidants.
A single kiwi contains up to 8 grams of fiber, which helps prevent constipation and promotes regular bowel movements, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This superfruit also contains actinidin, an enzyme that aids digestion by breaking down proteins — something rarely found in other foods.
Pasricha recommends kiwi over other high-fiber foods like prunes, which may cause bloating.
A 2022 study conducted by scientists from New Zealand, Italy, and Japan found that consuming two kiwis daily helped participants have more regular bowel movements and eased abdominal pain, indigestion, and straining during defecation.
The study showed kiwi was more effective than psyllium husk, a dietary supplement long considered a gold standard for treating digestive issues — but now outperformed by kiwi, according to Pasricha.
Meanwhile, a 2011 study from Norway found that kiwi consumption helped prevent DNA damage that can lead to cancerous tumors and also reduced triglycerides, which are linked to a higher risk of heart attacks.
A more recent 2023 study from China indicated that people who ate more kiwi had a 13% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer.
This small green fruit is also rich in vitamins C, E, and K, as well as antioxidants known to protect against cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, according to Dr. Pasricha.
