Smartphone Use Accelerates Double Chin and Wrinkles, Studies Warn

Constant downward phone posture weakens neck muscles, causes premature facial sagging, and leads to "tech neck" and early aging.

Watan-Constantly looking downward while using a mobile phone can accelerate the appearance of a double chin and facial wrinkles, according to multiple studies. They confirm that this forward-leaning head posture weakens the neck and jaw muscles and leads to skin sagging and early wrinkles, particularly in the lower part of the face.

Every face has its own characteristics—from skin quality to issues such as acne, dark spots, early aging signs, sagging skin, under-eye bags, and double chin.

While such features are natural with age, some can appear prematurely due to daily bad habits, such as excessive smartphone use.

The Culprit: Bad Posture and Overuse

Weight gain, hormonal changes, aging, and genetics are well-known causes of a double chin. However, recent studies now list excessive smartphone usage among the culprits.

Experts warn that frequent, unmindful phone use not only affects sleep, focus, and eyesight, but also alters facial structure, causing lower face sagging and a visible double chin.

This posture typically causes neck and floor-of-mouth muscles to weaken. Tilting the head forward while staring at a phone screen affects around 20 small muscles beneath the tongue.

It also leads to loosening in the cervical spine, and when combined with sagging under the mouth, it causes a lump under the chin, often mistaken for fat or skin sagging—but actually resulting from muscle laxity.

 Non-Surgical Solutions

To reduce a double chin without cosmetic surgery, experts recommend:

  • Proper tongue positioning in the upper palate

  • Tightening neck and mouth floor muscles

  • Holding the phone at eye level to avoid downward tilting

These steps can help reduce double chin visibility in up to 80% of cases.

Additionally, excessive phone use can cause what is now known as “smartphone wrinkles”—fine lines caused by poor head posture and squinting at screens. Adopting the correct posture when looking at your phone can help prevent both wrinkles and double chin formation.
