UN General Assembly Passes Gaza Ceasefire Resolution with Overwhelming Global Support
Palestinian leadership hails the UN vote demanding an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, condemning Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon and calling for an end to the blockade.
Watan-The United Nations General Assembly’s resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, strongly condemning the use of starvation as a weapon of war, and calling for an end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza has been widely welcomed by Palestinians.
The Palestinian presidency thanked the countries that voted in favor of the resolution, stating:“This decision confirms the world’s rejection of Israel’s aggression against our people, their displacement, killing, and starvation.”
The presidency added:“This resolution once again reflects the overwhelming global support for the Palestinian people and their just cause. The overwhelming vote in favor sends a clear message to the few states that opposed it: the world rejects double standards and calls on them to reconsider their position, which contradicts international consensus against occupation and aggression.”
The resolution was submitted by 23 countries along with Palestine, spearheaded by Spain, and was adopted by 149 members, with 12 opposing and 19 abstaining, following a U.S. veto in the UN Security Council on June 4, despite support from all other members.
The resolution firmly rejected any measures aimed at forcibly displacing the Palestinian people, and urged immediate and concrete steps to preserve the territorial integrity of the occupied Palestinian land, including East Jerusalem, and to unify Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority’s administration.
It also called for an immediate halt to all settlement construction and expansion, and stressed the need for accountability to ensure Israel complies with its obligations under international law. The resolution reaffirmed the General Assembly’s commitment to the two-state solution, declaring that Gaza is part of the future Palestinian state.
The Palestinian National Council said:“This international resolution reflects the collective will of the majority of world states and highlights the increasing political and moral isolation of the Israeli occupation government, which continues to commit war crimes against our people in Gaza under the cover of siege, starvation, and systematic destruction.”
It called for the resolution to be implemented through concrete steps on the ground.
Fatah spokesperson Abdul Fattah Douleh emphasized the urgent need to implement all UN resolutions related to the Palestinian issue, especially the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, describing the decision as an important step toward achieving justice and lasting peace in Palestine.
The Hamas movement also welcomed the resolution, calling the overwhelming vote a“Political and moral victory for our steadfast people, and evidence of the failure of the Zionist occupation and the U.S. administration to impose their false narrative.”
Hamas added that the vote“Exposes the collapse of so-called self-defense claims in the face of the massacres and genocide being committed by the enemy in Gaza,” and said it serves as a“Decisive response to the U.S. administration’s use of veto power at the Security Council just days ago.”
