Cat Caught Smuggling Drugs Into Costa Rican Prison
Guards Intercept Feline Drug Courier Carrying Marijuana and Cocaine Tied to Its Body.
Watan-Guards at a prison in Costa Rica intercepted an unusual smuggler after a cat entered the facility at night with drugs strapped to its body.
The cat was carrying 235 grams of marijuana and 67 grams of cocaine in two bags attached with adhesive tape.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Ministry of Justice said the cat was “caught red-handed” in May as it climbed the fence surrounding the prison located in the canton of Pococí (northeast).
A video shared by the ministry showed a guard climbing the fence to catch the black-and-white cat, then gently handling the frail animal while police officers carefully removed the narcotics.
The ministry stated that “thanks to the quick intervention by the guards, the cat was captured, the packages were removed, and the delivery to inmates was prevented.”
The cat was later handed over to an organization specializing in animal care.
