Hamas Releases Israeli-American Soldier to ICRC in Gaza, Opening Path for Ceasefire Talks
Eidan Alexander's Handover Sparks Renewed Momentum for Gaza Ceasefire as Indirect U.S.-Hamas Negotiations Continue.
Watan-On Monday, Hamas announced that the Al-Qassam Brigades, its military wing, handed over Israeli-American soldier Eidan Alexander to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, earlier that afternoon.
Hamas stated that this step could pave the way for resuming ceasefire talks in the war-torn Gaza Strip, affirming its readiness to engage in “negotiations aimed at reaching a sustainable comprehensive ceasefire agreement.”
Earlier on Monday, U.S. presidential envoy Adam Boehler arrived in Israel with Alexander’s parents to receive him.
According to Israel’s Army Radio, Boehler and Alexander’s family landed in Israel shortly after Hamas announced, late Sunday, its intention to release the soldier. The announcement followed days of communication with the U.S. administration as part of broader efforts to reach a ceasefire and allow the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Alexander’s family stated he would travel to Qatar to meet former U.S. President Donald Trump, provided his health permits. Trump is currently visiting the Middle East from May 13 to 16, with stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE—his first official regional tour since beginning his second term in January.
This development comes within the framework of indirect negotiations between Hamas and the United States, mediated by Egypt and Qatar, and notably without Israel’s direct involvement.
