Trump Announces Ceasefire Agreement Between India and Pakistan After U.S.-Mediated Talks
Following deadly cross-border violence and fears of nuclear escalation, India and Pakistan agree to a full ceasefire backed by global diplomatic pressure.
Watan-U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between India and Pakistan, following deadly clashes between the two nuclear-armed nations.
In a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “After a long night of U.S.-mediated talks, I’m pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire,” praising both nations for their “common sense and great wisdom.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the agreement followed intensive negotiations involving himself and Vice President J.D. Vance with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and other senior officials.
Rubio posted on X: “I am pleased to announce that the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to begin talks on a wide range of issues at a neutral location.”
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar told Geo News that it was a “comprehensive, not partial” ceasefire and revealed that nearly 30 countries contributed to the diplomatic push behind the deal.
However, an Indian government source noted that the two nations currently have no plans to discuss any of the underlying disputes beyond the ceasefire itself.
The announcement came on a day of heightened fears over the potential use of nuclear weapons. Pakistan’s military stated that its top military and civilian nuclear oversight body was scheduled to meet, though the Defense Minister later clarified no date had been set for such a meeting.
Meanwhile, both sides showed willingness to de-escalate following today’s crossfire, as civilian deaths on both sides of the border rose to 66.
Tensions had surged since April 22, when gunmen opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam, in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people and wounding several others.
