Talk of Netanyahu Plea Deal Grows as Gaza War Overshadows Corruption Trial

Facing cross-examination and rising legal risk, Netanyahu may consider a political exit deal amid Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza.

Watan-The Israeli newspaper Maariv reported on Saturday that conditions are now “ripe” for a possible plea bargain deal involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently on trial for corruption. The report suggests that some of his supporters believe he may step down within a year and a half, following the ongoing war in Gaza.

Netanyahu is facing charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust at the Jerusalem District Court—charges that could land him in prison if upheld by the Supreme Court. He continues to deny all allegations.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a U.S.-backed war in Gaza that many international observers and human rights organizations describe as genocidal, resulting in over 170,000 dead and wounded Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children, in addition to more than 11,000 missing.

Netanyahu May Seek Exit Deal as Cross-Examination Looms and Gaza War Intensifies

According to Maariv, Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to Baku, Azerbaijan on May 9, may delay the start of the most critical phase of his trial—the cross-examination phase—where prosecutors aim to expose inconsistencies in Netanyahu’s testimony and damage his credibility.

Tuesday marked Netanyahu’s 27th court appearance, with hearings set to conclude by Wednesday. The cross-examination is scheduled to begin on May 9, prompting concern among his inner circle about the potential consequences.

The paper noted: “Cross-examination is the most dangerous and unpredictable phase in any defendant’s trial, including Netanyahu’s.”

Some close to Netanyahu have reportedly proposed scenarios to postpone this phase, including intensifying the war in Gaza as a political distraction.

Amid these tensions, Maariv highlighted increasing internal discussions among Netanyahu’s allies about a plea deal that would allow him to exit political life in exchange for avoiding prison. Sources close to the prime minister reportedly warned: “Once cross-examination begins, a plea bargain will no longer be possible.”
