Spanish PM Thanks Morocco for Emergency Electricity Supply Amid Unprecedented Blackout
Pedro Sánchez Praises Morocco’s Support After Major Power Outage Disrupts Spain and Portugal.
Watan-Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his gratitude to Morocco for its support in supplying electricity to Spain following a sudden blackout on Monday.
The Moroccan state channel “Medi 1 TV” reported that Sánchez thanked Morocco for helping to restore electricity to the Andalusia region through a temporary power connection.
Speaking at a press conference, Sánchez stated: “We thank Morocco for helping us restore power to Andalusia through a temporary connection.”
Earlier Monday morning, Spain and Portugal experienced unprecedented power outages, with official warnings that full service restoration could take several hours.
In a statement, Spain’s electricity grid operator, Red Eléctrica, announced that restoring power could take between six to ten hours, describing the situation as “unprecedented.”
The blackouts caused significant traffic congestion in Madrid due to malfunctioning traffic signals, while disruptions were reported at Barajas Airport, according to the BBC.
Spain’s national railway company, Renfe, also announced the suspension of train services at midday due to a “failure in the national electricity grid.”
Meanwhile, in Portugal, electricity company E-Redes suggested that the outage might have been caused by a “problem in the European electricity grid,” according to Politico.
Later, Portugal’s national electricity company (REN) stated that full restoration could take up to a week, noting that soaring temperatures might have contributed to the crisis.
