Israeli Shin Bet Officer Arrested for Leaking Sensitive Information Amid Ongoing Political Tensions

A Shin Bet officer's arrest for leaking sensitive data exposes internal conflicts within Israel’s security apparatus and political system, particularly surrounding the infiltration of extremist groups into the police force.

Watan-In parallel with ongoing discussions and mutual accusations about the war and stalled deals, Israel finds itself once again embroiled in an internal debate concerning a longstanding issue. This comes after the lifting of a gag order related to an investigation into “Jewish terrorism” conducted by the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet).

The investigation centers around a Shin Bet officer who has been arrested on suspicion of leaking sensitive information to a government minister and journalists about the infiltration of extremist followers of Meir Kahane into the police.

According to the details revealed today, the Shin Bet officer has been detained since last Wednesday for leaking internal information to Minister for Diaspora Affairs Amichai Chikli and some Israeli journalists.

The document referred to the Kahanist movement and the extremist views advocated by the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, who espoused violent rhetoric against Arabs.

Shin Bet Officer Detained for Leaking Sensitive Information About Kahanist Infiltration into Police

Sources also reported that the police investigative unit “MAHASH” recently opened a “sensitive” investigation against a Shin Bet officer suspected of leaking classified information. As of now, the officer is banned from meeting with his defense lawyer due to the severity of the charges.
The investigation and arrest follow an Israeli journalist’s revelation on March 23, 2023, about internal documents from the Shin Bet, which indicated the agency was investigating the infiltration of extremist groups into the police. These groups were allegedly appointed to leadership positions in the police by Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a known supporter of racist ideologies. The document referred to the Kahanist movement and the extremist views advocated by the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, who espoused violent rhetoric against Arabs.
At the time, Shin Bet did not deny the publication of these documents, confirming that the Kahanist movements and their affiliates are illegal and have been designated as terrorist organizations since 2016. They continued to operate despite being banned, and the Shin Bet is working to expose and prevent their activities within Israeli institutions, especially law enforcement agencies.
The detained officer is accused of leaking sensitive information multiple times to external parties. The Israeli court recently extended his detention by eight days, and tomorrow, Wednesday, a further extension may be requested.

Shin Bet Officer Leaks Sensitive Documents, MK Tali Gotlib Violates Gag Order Amid Investigation

In addition to leaking the internal document related to the infiltration of Kahanist groups, another document was leaked to an Israeli journalist, Shirit Afitan Cohen, regarding Shin Bet’s stance on the events leading up to October 7th. The officer who leaked the document believed it contradicted the agency’s internal investigation into those events.
The Israeli government’s legal advisor has authorized the investigation of Shin Bet officers by MAHASH. Since the beginning of this month, the investigation has been conducted under a wide gag order to prevent any harm to state security.
According to the investigation file, the detained Shin Bet officer claimed that he wanted to inform the public about important topics that were being distorted by parties controlling information within Shin Bet. He also argued that the data he leaked was not classified.
In its statement, MAHASH expressed regret for revealing details of the case despite the gag order, stating that what was published was partial and created a distorted picture of the case. They also confirmed that the detained officer used his position to leak sensitive information to external entities.
Notably, MK Tali Gotlib (Likud) violated the gag order and publicly revealed details of the case on social media, directing her criticisms at the “Bermuda Triangle,” a term she used to refer to the government’s legal advisor, the heads of Shin Bet, and MAHASH, aligning with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s ongoing attacks on the so-called “deep state.”

Ben-Gvir Responds to Shin Bet Allegations Amid Tensions Over October 7th Failure

Minister of Internal Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is suspected by Shin Bet of facilitating the infiltration of Kahanists into the police force, quickly responded, claiming that Shin Bet had gathered information against him for political assassination. He also accused the agency of gathering information against the new police commissioner, the head of the prison services, and several police leaders who had followed the law and respected the minister’s directives.

This conflict has been ongoing since the beginning of the year, in the context of the government’s judicial reforms (seen as a political coup), which led to tensions between the political level and the security establishment. This has also fueled the ongoing debate over who is responsible for the significant failure on October 7th.

In this dispute, the government claims that the failure lies with the security and military establishment, which failed to detect Hamas’s plans and could not face the initial attacks. In contrast, the security establishment argues that while it may have failed in its responsibilities, the greater failure is strategic, as the government had mistakenly believed that Hamas could be deterred and that peace could be bought with money.

Furthermore, the government hindered the assassination of Hamas leaders, seeking to maintain Hamas’s rule in Gaza and thereby reinforce the geopolitical division between Gaza and the West Bank, preventing progress toward a two-state solution and the creation of a Palestinian state.
