Egypt Detains 20 Individuals After Months of Enforced Disappearance

Authorities charge detainees with spreading false news, joining a banned group, and misusing social media amid ongoing crackdowns.

Watan-Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution has ordered the detention of 20 individuals after their names appeared at the prosecution headquarters following months of enforced disappearance. They were interrogated and subsequently ordered to be held for 15 days pending investigations into several cases.

On Sunday, the prosecution charged the detainees with offenses including “spreading and broadcasting false news and information,” “joining a terrorist organization and participating in achieving its goals while being aware of its objectives,” “misusing social media,” “exploiting the internet to spread crimes,” and “financing and promoting violence.”

The list of detainees includes prominent figures such as former Shura Council member and Muslim Brotherhood leader in Monufia, Hassan Saad Al-Sawaf, along with Ahmed Nageh Reedy, Ahmed Nabil Shabr, Ismail Abdel Hadi Mohamed, Badawi Al-Sibai Asal, Tamer Ibrahim Mahmoud, Jihad Al-Sayed Tawfiq, Ziad Osama Mohie, Omar Abdel Moneim Saber, Kilani Abdel Kader Abdel Aal, Mohamed Ibrahim Al-Shafie, Mohamed Ahmed Azmi, Mohamed Al-Sayed Hanafi, Mohamed Hamdi Qataqat, Mohamed Abdel Hafiz Hassan, Mohamed Kamel Hamza, Hammam Masoud Abdel Qawi, Walid Mahmoud Abu Zaid, Yasser Abdel Wanis Abdel Salam, and Yasser Mostafa Mohamed.

The families of the detainees have also submitted complaints to the Public Prosecutor regarding their disappearance following their arrests by security authorities.
