Watan-A Chinese study has found that using ventilation fans can significantly reduce the risk of inhaling harmful bacterial particles in public restrooms after toilet flushing.Researchers from China University of Geosciences explained that inhaling these harmful particles could lead to abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.

The findings were published on Monday in the journal Risk Analysis. Ventilation fans are used to improve indoor air quality by expelling polluted air and bringing in fresh air from outside. These fans help reduce concentrations of pollutants and germs, enhancing the health of individuals in enclosed spaces such as offices, homes, and public restrooms.

The study was conducted in a restroom of an office building in China, where researchers analyzed bacterial particle emissions after flushing squat toilets and bidet-equipped toilets under different flow and ventilation conditions.

The results revealed that toilet flushing releases unhealthy concentrations of bacteria into the air, exceeding the safety limits set by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

  • Squat toilets released 42–62% higher concentrations of Staphylococcus aureus and 16–27% higher levels of E. coli compared to bidet-equipped toilets.

Researchers emphasized that these findings provide scientific evidence supporting the importance of enhancing ventilation systems in public restrooms to reduce the spread of harmful bacterial particles.

They suggested that improving ventilation by upgrading exhaust fan efficiency and increasing air exchange rates can effectively lower bacterial concentrations and related health risks.

The study’s authors also noted that their findings could encourage policymakers to establish new public health guidelines, such as making ventilation fans mandatory in shared spaces, especially in hospitals, schools, and offices.
