Algeria Among the Top Exporters to Israel?! Widespread Controversy and Calls for Official Clarification

A controversial report claims Algeria ranks among the top Arab exporters to Israel, sparking public outrage and raising questions about its accuracy.

Watan-Social media erupted after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) published a report claiming that Algeria ranks fourth among Arab countries in exports to Israel.

The report, which has yet to receive any official response from the Algerian government, has sparked widespread debate, given Algeria’s firm stance against normalization with Israel and its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.

According to the report, trade between Algeria and Tel Aviv has exceeded $30 million since 2017, with exports primarily consisting of hydrogen and rare chemicals. It also cites data from Trading Economics and UN Comtrade, showing that Algeria exported $9.77 million worth of goods to Israel in 2020, $14.9 million in 2021, and over $21 million in 2022.

Public Outcry and Calls for Clarification

These claims were met with widespread skepticism from Algerians, with activists quickly denying any trade ties between Algeria and Israel. They pointed to Algeria’s consistent policies in support of Palestine and rejection of normalization, urging the government to issue an official statement clarifying the matter.

Algeria has long been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, insisting at regional summits that “no normalization should occur before the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.” The country was also the only one to successfully push for Israel’s expulsion from the African Union summit last year.

In another show of defiance, the Algerian delegation walked out of a UN Security Council session last year in protest against the participation of an Israeli representative.

Misinformation or Reality?

These strong positions raise important questions: Are there really Algerian exports to Israel? Or are these numbers inaccurate and intended to undermine Algeria’s credibility in supporting Palestine?

Until an official response is issued, the key question remains: Is this an attempt to tarnish Algeria’s image and cast doubt on its unwavering stance against normalization?
