Turkish Annexation of Gaza? Davutoğlu’s Proposal Sparks Heated Debate

Davutoğlu’s Gaza proposal sparks debate over sovereignty and regional impact.

Watan-Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s proposal to annex the Gaza Strip to the Turkish Republic has sparked widespread controversy on social media, with opinions sharply divided between supporters and opponents of the idea.

The proposal, which came in response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to displace Palestinians from Gaza, ignited a wave of reactions, leading the hashtag “GazzeTürkiye’ye – Gaza to Turkey” to trend on platform X.

Davutoğlu justified his proposal by stating that Gaza was once under Ottoman rule and that Turkey, as the legitimate successor to the Ottoman state, should be the first to protect it from foreign ambitions.

According to the Future Party leader, turning Gaza into an autonomous region under Turkish sovereignty could serve as a step to shield it from forced displacement and pave the way for establishing a viable Palestinian state

This proposal was far from ordinary, as it was met with a wide range of reactions. Some social media users viewed Davutoğlu’s remarks as an infringement on Palestinian sovereignty and an attempt to reimpose a new Ottoman guardianship over the Strip. They stressed that the real solution lies in supporting the resistance and strengthening Palestinian independence, free from any foreign intervention.

Turkey’s Role in Gaza: Bold Move or Political Rhetoric?

On the other hand, some welcomed Davutoğlu’s idea, considering it a possible avenue for Turkey to play a more active role in the Palestinian cause and provide international protection for Gaza against Israeli occupation and displacement plans. Many questions were raised about Turkey’s willingness to bear the consequences of such a proposal and whether Ankara could handle responsibility for Gaza amid the region’s complex geopolitical landscape.

The key question remains: Can Turkey actually implement this proposal, or is it merely political rhetoric aimed at countering Trump’s plans and Israeli occupation strategies? And what is the Palestinian stance on the idea of annexing Gaza to another state’s sovereignty? Amid these developments, Gaza’s future remains open to multiple scenarios, caught in the web of intricate political tensions.
