UAE Supreme Court to Issue Verdict in “UAE 84” Case Amid Enforced Disappearances

Growing Human Rights Concerns as Prisoners of Conscience Face Harsh Conditions in UAE Prisons.

Watan-The verdict on the appeals in the “UAE 84” case is set to be issued tomorrow, Tuesday, amid the continued enforced disappearance of prisoners of conscience in UAE prisons as punishment for their calls for reform and public freedoms.

The UAE Supreme Federal Court has announced that Tuesday, March 4, 2025, has been set as the date for issuing the verdict on the appeals submitted by the Public Prosecutor and the defendants in the case known in the media as “UAE 84,” according to the official news agency “WAM.”

The court had reviewed appeals against the rulings issued by the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals – State Security Division – in case number 452 of 2023. The case involved the conviction of 53 individuals and several companies, with sentences ranging from various prison terms, including life imprisonment, along with financial fines amounting to 20 million dirhams.

UAE Appeals Case Raises Human Rights Concerns

The appeals also included requests from the Public Prosecutor to review certain aspects of the ruling, particularly concerning the dismissal of criminal charges against 24 defendants.

The Emirates Detainees Advocacy Center stated in a report received by “Emirates Leaks” that despite the ongoing judicial process, the case raises growing human rights concerns. Families of the convicted individuals have confirmed that they have been subjected to enforced disappearance since the sentences were issued against them in July 2024.

According to the center, this enforced disappearance constitutes a clear violation of international human rights standards, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention Against Enforced Disappearance, both of which affirm the right to know the fate of detainees and ensure their safety.

Local and international human rights organizations are closely monitoring the case, with increasing calls for a fair trial, disclosure of the whereabouts of those forcibly disappeared, and respect for their rights in accordance with international standards.

Prisoners of conscience in the UAE endure harsh and inhumane conditions in prisons, which have turned into a nightmare for them. Many human rights organizations have condemned Abu Dhabi’s treatment of detainees, who are imprisoned solely for peacefully expressing their opinions.

These detainees, including human rights activists and political figures in the UAE, face arbitrary detention, brutal torture, solitary confinement, and medical neglect, making their prison conditions described as “hell.”
